Cambodian Acting Head of State Seeks Dialogue with Myanmar Leader Amid Crisis

Phnom Penh, April 9, 2024: Acting Head of State of Cambodia, Hun Sen, has put forward a request for a videoconference with Sen. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the State Administration Council of Myanmar, to deliberate on potential resolutions to the ongoing crisis in Myanmar.

This proposal came to light as Hun Sen, who also holds the position of President of the Senate, met with Kyaw Soe Min, Ambassador of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to Cambodia, marking his first diplomatic engagement since assuming the role of Acting Head of State.

During their conversation, Hun Sen expressed a keen interest in scheduling a videoconference with Min Aung Hlaing at a convenient time around the Sankranta (New Year) festivities. The initiative underscores Cambodia's commitment to engaging in constructive dialogue aimed at fostering peace and stability in the region.

Reflecting on Cambodia's tumultuous history post-Khmer Rouge and the subsequent period of sanctions, Hun Sen highlighted the significant strides made under the Win-Win policy, which ushered in an era of national unity, peace, stability, and prosperity for Cambodia. He implied that similar principles could potentially guide Myanmar towards overcoming its current challenges.

Furthermore, Hun Sen encouraged Ambassador Kyaw Soe Min to leverage his new diplomatic role to enhance bilateral relations between Cambodia and Myanmar, especially as the two nations approach the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic ties next year.

For his part, Ambassador Kyaw Soe Min acknowledged Hun Sen's election as President of the 5th legislature of the Senate and committed to fostering bilateral and multilateral cooperation within the frameworks of ASEAN, as well as on regional and global stages.

This development marks a significant diplomatic effort by Cambodia to engage with Myanmar in hopes of contributing to a peaceful solution to the latter's crisis, reaffirming Cambodia's role as an active and concerned member of the ASEAN community.
